How to pick a bed for a child or a teenager?
Choosing a single bed for a child’s or teenager’s room has to be a careful decision. That’s because the bed is the most important element of equipment in every bedroom. It impacts the interior’s appearance, but most of all, the health and wellbeing of the user. When properly selected, it serves its purpose perfectly and serves the child for many years.
The size and structure of a bed for a child
Parents choosing a single bed for a children's room sometimes make the error of buying a model that matches the child’s current age and height. Durability of the bed doesn’t make much difference in such case, as the child soon grows out of it, which makes it necessary to buy them a new one. It sometimes happens that parents make a wrong decision lured by the style of small single beds intended for few-year-olds, which is why it is sometimes better to wait with making the final decision to first analyze all the upsides and downsides of such piece of furniture. The child’s age, on the other hand, has to be taken into account when evaluating the structure of a single bed. When it comes to the youngest ones, a good solution is to buy a model equipped with a railing so that the child doesn’t fall to the floor when shifting positions in their sleep. Railings can often be removable, which means they can be removed once they’re no longer needed.
What materials should a single bed be made of?
In order for a child’s bed to serve its function for many years while also providing comfort and safety, the materials used during the manufacturing should be characterized by durability. A significant part of single beds intended for children’s rooms are wooden beds. In such situation, the quality of furniture mostly depends on the type of wood, which also has a significant impact on the product’s price. Especially noteworthy are single beds made of pine wood. That’s because pine is affordable while bearing characteristics that allow to make durable furniture out of it with high aesthetic values. It stands out by being hygroscopic, which means that furniture made of it doesn’t absorb water and thus doesn’t get damaged. The second advantage of pine wood is high elasticity, which means resistance to mechanical damages. What is more, furniture made of pine have anti-static properties, which means they are resistant to accumulated dust. Therefore a single bed made of pine makes a good choice for someone with an allergy. Great durability is also provided by beech and oak, although furniture made of these types of wood is more expensive than the pine type. Besides the type of wood, it is also important whether a single bed was made of solid boards or glued elements. Plywood furniture is cheaper, but their durability is shorter than with products made of solid wood. The safety of a child's bed, on the other hand, is determined by the type of paints and varnishes used in order to impregnate the wood and give it a desired color. One has to make sure that they have all the required certificates that confirm no negative impact on human health and natural environment’s condition.
What mattress to pick for a child's bed?
One of the most important elements of every bed is the mattress. A child and a teenager – just like an adult – sweats during sleep. The purpose of a mattress is not only to provide comfort, but also to drain the sweat, which makes it important for it to provide a good air circulation. Purchasing a mattress for a single bed is easier than with beds untended for two people, since making a decision on the type of fill, thickness and hardness doesn’t require taking needs of two users into account. A bed for child up to 12 years of age can be equipped with a thinner mattress than the kind needed by adults, due to lower body mass, but a single bed for a teenager should have a thicker mattress. The recommended mattress hardness also depends od the user’s weight, but it doesn’t mean that children need very soft mattresses. A better solution would be those with average hardness levels. The mattress should be stored under a cover that will extend its lifespan and make it easier to keep it clean.
Single bed style
The aesthetics of a bed influence the appearance of the entire room, as well as the wellbeing of the owner. When picking a single bed, parents should remember that it is supposed to fit tastes of a child or teenager who will be using it. It’s a good idea, though, to make sure that the bed goes well with all the other elements of equipment in the bedroom, both style-wise as well as color-wise, and could be used for many years. There are single beds for children available for sale that are shaped like castles, cars and ships. It’s a good idea to pay attention to the fact that a seven-year-old will be delighted with them, but few years down the road their taste will change. Even if the bed isn’t too small, a teenager won’t feel like using it anymore. A better solution would therefore be to buy a more classic single bed.
